The client, a dialysis patient, requested for a home modification for Dialysis treatment which is usually done in a hospital. The Victorian project was the first to have patient’s dialysis treatment in their homes. The existing residence design requirements was to accommodate the necessary dialysis treatment, incorporate easy physical access and upgrade the interior to address potential impairment issues.
The project serves as a study in Medical Home Theory, proving that complex acute care can be successfully decentralized through disciplined architectural modification. The home redesign rejects the sterile clinical aesthetic for a User-Centric environment that provides a “supportive and strong living environment”. By embedding life-critical infrastructure within the familiar Victorian context, the design achieves a balance between high-tech reliability and the psychological well-being afforded by home-based care.
