The modern mass-meeting facility incorporates a Local and Cultural Vernacular. This ensures the building is not an anonymous “big box,” but a structure that resonates with Fiji’s aesthetic heritage. This “Critical Regionalist” approach allows a large-scale modern facility to feel grounded in its specific geographic and social landscape.
The core of the design is the 44m x 32m clear-span hall, a “long-span” structural solution that eliminates internal columns to provide an unobstructed field of play. This spatial volume is engineered for multi-modality, allowing the floor plan to shift seamlessly between:
● Athletic Mode: Accommodating standardized courts for basketball, netball, and volleyball.
● Assembly Mode: Utilizing 1200-spectator stadium seating for large-scale viewing.
● Exhibition/Social Mode: Providing a “wide arena” for trade shows, networking, and even informal community events like children’s parties.
The architecture is treated as a “supporting machine” for human activity. By integrating specialized Audio-Visual support systems, dedicated change rooms, administrative offices, and ample storage, the building structure responds directly to the logistical demands of high-occupancy events. The inclusion of “break-out” areas acknowledges the contemporary need for interstitial spaces—places where networking and the exchange of ideas happen outside the main event.
